Other measures included stopping foreign health workers bringing in family members on their visas increasing a surcharge migrants have to pay to use the health service by 66 per cent, and raising the minimum income for family visas. Indian nationals represent the largest group of students granted leave to in the post-study Graduate visa rout. The group also has the second highest number of dependents in the UK.

UK Student Visa: UK granted over 1 lakh student visas to India in 2023

A total of 142,848 sponsored study visas were granted to Indians, an increase of 49,883 (+54%) compared to the year ending June 2022, statistics from the UK Home Office showed. It also showed that grants to Indians are now around seven times higher than in the year ending June 2019.

UK issued close to 500,000 sponsored UK study visas in June 2023, equivalent to a rise of 23% on the previous year, with Indians accounting for almost a third. According to the stats released, almost 154,000 of all sponsored study-related visas were granted to students’ dependents.

UK cracks down on overseas student visa right to bring family dependants

The UK government on Tuesday announced a new immigration crackdown targeted at overseas students, including Indians, and their visa right to bring dependant family members to the country while enrolled at a British institution. In a written statement to the House of Commons, UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman said that only international students on postgraduate courses currently designated as research programs will be allowed to bring in their family members, including children and elderly parents, as their dependants.

The Indian-origin minister said the new package of measures was necessary after it emerged that around 136,000 visas were granted to dependants of sponsored students in the year ending December 2022 – a more than eight-fold increase from 16,000 in 2019.

“This package includes: removing the right for international students to bring dependants unless they are on postgraduate courses currently designated as research programs,” Braverman’s statement notes.

Announcement: 20-hour cap lifted for Visa holders in Health and Social Care

In February 2023, the Home Office changed the rules for supplementary work for sponsored workers in the UK on a Health and Care Visa, lifting the 20-hour cap on supplementary work.

Ordinarily sponsored workers can work in their main sponsored job and can undertake up to 20 hours of supplementary work. Supplementary work must be in the same profession and at the same professional level as their main job or must be in a shortage occupation. Supplementary employment does not have to be with a licensed sponsor and the Home Office does not need to be informed of the additional work.
